Portrait of James Yang, corporate event emcee in Singapore

James Yang is a corporate event emcee in Singapore who has hosted gala dinners, conferences, product launches and award ceremonies for 20 years, across more than 2,000 events in 13 countries. Corporate functions can easily feel stiff if the host only reads from a lectern, or awkward if the humour misses the room. Across 20 years and 2,000+ events in 13 countries for over 800 multinational corporations, financial institutions, law firms, and Singapore government agencies, I have built a reputation for bridging that gap: combining high-protocol precision with quick-witted, brand-safe banter in English and Mandarin so senior leadership, regional clients, and staff stay genuinely engaged from the opening address to the final toast.

What happens behind the curtain, and how I hold the room

Every live corporate production has moving parts behind the scenes. Senior management or a Guest of Honour gets delayed in traffic, the banquet kitchen needs five extra minutes before the award presentation, or a presentation slide deck freezes mid-cue. My job is to absorb all of that in real time, using spontaneous, intelligent crowd work and light humour to hold the room’s attention so your guests think it was part of the show.

That effortless spontaneity on stage is backed by rigorous preparation before the doors open: consulting with your organising committee, verifying every VIP title and name pronunciation, aligning cue-to-cue with your AV director and banquet manager, and knowing exactly when to dial up the laughs and when to give a ministerial or executive segment formal gravitas.

The formats I am booked for most

Annual dinners and gala nights

Client appreciation galas, milestone anniversaries, and regional dinners. I pace the energy across a three-hour banquet, balancing polished executive speeches with warm, spontaneous table banter that keeps 500+ guests attentive until the final toast.

Product and brand launches

Media reveals, flagship openings, and regional brand showcases. Delivered on-message with magnetic stage energy, hitting lighting and AV reveal cues to the second while keeping media, partners, and VIPs buzzing.

Award ceremonies

National honours, industry excellence nights, and regional recognition galas. Every recipient’s name and title is verified beforehand, stage traffic and official photo windows are managed cleanly, and the celebratory momentum never dips across dozens of awards.

Conferences and seminars

APAC leadership summits, medical and tech forums, and financial symposia. I bridge heavy keynote sessions with sharp, refreshing wit, keep multi-speaker panels strictly on schedule, and prevent the post-lunch energy slump.

Townhalls and annual functions

Company-wide townhalls, kick-offs, and leadership dialogues. Hosted with relatable humour in the natural register your people actually speak.

Selected Corporate, Government & National stages

My corporate and official track record includes hosting the 8th Singapore Silent Heroes Awards at Shangri-La Hotel (with Guest of Honour Mr Lawrence Wong, now Prime Minister of Singapore), functions at the Shangri-La Dialogue for international Defence Ministers and Military Chiefs[2], the SAS 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner at the Asian Actuarial Conference, the NUHS Superstar Nurses Awards, the 500-guest Singapore Red Cross 70th Anniversary Benefit Gala, and regional legal and banking summits for 700+ senior partners and delegates.

Questions

Which emcee should I book for a corporate event or conference in Singapore?
Look for an emcee who combines high-protocol reliability with natural, intelligent crowd work. In Singapore and APAC regional rooms, your host often needs to respect ministerial or C-suite protocols in one segment and warm up 500 or more delegates or clients with sharp, brand-safe humour in the next, ideally with fluent English and Mandarin switching so every guest feels included.
Do you work from our run sheet or write your own?
Both. If your event agency or comms team already has a run sheet and script skeleton, I review it with you, verify all VIP pronunciations, and refine the stage transitions. If you are starting from a blank page, I can help structure the programme flow, advise on segment pacing, and draft the hosting script from scratch.
Can you host a corporate event in English and Mandarin?
Yes. I host fluently in both English and Mandarin, switching naturally mid-room depending on the audience demographic rather than reading every sentence twice in translation. This keeps bilingual gala dinners, regional Greater China and APAC conferences, and cross-border townhalls moving at a brisk, engaging pace.
How early do you arrive?
I typically arrive 1 to 2 hours before doors open, or earlier if your production schedule requires full dress rehearsals with the AV team and Guest of Honour protocol officers. That gives us time to test mics, walk the stage cues, and align with your show caller and banquet manager.
Do you host conferences as well as dinners?
Yes, often for the same client on the same day. Many regional organisations book me to anchor their daytime conference, keeping keynotes, fireside chats, and panels sharp and on schedule, and then transition into hosting their evening gala or awards dinner, creating a seamless thread across the entire summit.

Tell me the date and what the night is.

I reply personally, usually the same day.
